Should You Run Applications on an External Drive on Your Mac?

I get asked quite often about whether you should run your applications on an external drive on your Mac. Now, I do want to address running applications on an external hard drive whether using Windows, Linux, and specifically with MacOS. It is possible to run applications and software on an external drive, however the bigger question is, should you run these programs exclusively on that drive?

I also test out gaming on an external SSD, which does seem to hold up well and appears to be a viable option. So, for those of you that want to save space and game on a Mac and use an external SSD, this may be an option for you.
